Characteristic Head slightly compressed, shaped like a blunt awl. Snout short. Mouth inferior, arched. Five barbells, shorter than half of head length, including four maxillary barbells, one pairs of mandibular barbells at corner of mouth and two pairs of barbells on chin. Eye small, on upper side of head. Body cylindrical, elongated, posterior laterally compressed; dorsal and ventral profile horizontal. Scales tiny, cycloid, covered by mucus; head naked; lateral line unapparent. Longitudinal scales:140-170; dorsal fin rays:3+6-7; pelvic fin rays:1+6; anal fin rays:3+5. Pectoral fins end distant from pelvic fin origin; dorsal fin origin at middle between pectoral fin origin and caudal fin base; pelvic fin origin slightly behind dorsal fin origin; caudal fin rounded. Dark brownish dorsally; light yellow ventrally. Irregular dark blotches spread over side of body, dorsal and anal fins; an apparent spot on upper side of caudal fin base.
